“I will give you the treasures of darkness, riches stored in secret places, so that you may know that I am the LORD, the God of Israel, who summons you by name.”      Isaiah 45:3

mustard seed faithThis evening I went down to the creek where my children and grandchildren have loved playing for years.  Last year the meadow along the woods was nothing but mud because bulldozers had dug a deep trench so that the Marathon oil pipeline could be laid down the field and across the creek.  I hated the way our privacy had been invaded and the lovely quiet of the wooded creek seemed to be a thing of the past.  But the people from Marathon had been very nice and I was thankful that they had saved as many of our trees as possible.

This coming Fall, I am planning to teach a class of International ladies in Friendship to paint wildflowers and I wondered where I would find enough flowers, or flower magazines and pictures to use as examples.   I was hoping to order some flower catalogs that would be helpful.  I even sent off for one but it never came.

But God is so awesome!  I discovered that down at the creek and along the meadow next to the woods there was an abundance of beautiful wildflowers blooming this summer.  Many of these wildflowers I had never seen growing down there before.  There were hundreds of pretty yellow daisy like flowers growing along the edge of the woods next to the creek.wildflowers sunflowersI also discovered great bunches of black-eyed Susans  and lovely pink, lavender and white wild flowers which may have been some kind of phlox.  I am convinced that God not only provides for our needs but He delights in giving us the desires of our hearts when we love Him. wildflower beauty“Delight yourself in the LORD and He will give you the desires of your heart.”      Psalm 37:4

And the abundance with which he does this overwhelms me!wildflowers beauty2It occurred to me that the real treasures of darkness and the riches stored in secret places spoken of in Isaiah 45:3 are NOT gold and silver or precious jewels.  The real riches are those that God has hidden in seeds that suddenly spring forth producing the beauty of a tree or flower.  Or think about what happens when the seed of a man and woman is fertilized in love, and by the power of God brings forth the beauty and sweetness of a newborn baby. scan000shepherd-babyThis is the awesome, amazing power of God to give a seed life and energy and purpose.  And it fills me with praise for the one and only Creator.

“Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is a work within us.”   Ephesians 3:20

“So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen.  For what is seem is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.”    II Corinthians 4:18   Mountain fogSometimes our pathway takes us through a season of darkness but even in the blackest night Jesus provides a light when we trust and focus on Him instead of our worries.

“In Him was life, and that life was the light of men.”  John 1:4

Only God can see the future and He alone knows the best way for us to go and will stay by our side every step of the journey.  future unknown 6“Commit your way to the LORD; Trust in him and he will do this:  He will make your righteousness shine like the dawn, the justice of your cause like the noonday sun.”  Psalm 37:5,6

With a heart filled with trust, we have nothing to fear.

“For the LORD, gives wisdom, and from His mouth come knowledge and understanding.  He holds victory in store for the upright, He is a shield to those whose walk is blameless, for He guards the course of the just and protects the way of His faithful ones.”   Proverbs 2:6-8

The way will open up as we go and Jesus will light our path.

“We live by faith, not by sight.”         II Corinthians 5:7   future unknown 1

“The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched.  They must be felt within the heart.”        Helen Keller

“But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God.”                              John 3:21   future unknown 3And let us not forget each day when our business seems overwhelming to kneel and pray knowing you will help us accomplish all we need to do in the quickest and best way.

“I’ve much to do today, dear Lord
But let me kneel a bit
Before the threshold of my day
that I may enter it
With mind serene and heart made fresh
with fragrant heavenly dew
that every moment of the day
I’ll be reflecting You.”
by Alice Hansche Mortenson   future unknown 5“And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.”       Colossians 3:17

Shout To The Lord
“My Jesus, my Savior, Lord, there is none like You;
All of my days I want to praise the wonders of your mighty love.
My comfort, my Shelter, Tower of refuge and strength;
Let every breath, all that I am, never cease to worship You.
Shout to the Lord, all the earth, let us sing
Power and majesty, praise to the King;
Mountains bow down and the seas will roar
At the sound of your name.
I sing for joy at the work of your hands,
Forever I’ll love You, forever I’ll stand,
Nothing compares to the promise I have in You.”

“Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.”            Psalm 51:10

But how shall we know when our heart is purified?
When we become a reflection of the Master Goldsmith.

“At one time we too were foolish, disobedient,
and enslaved by all kinds of passions and pleasures.
We lived in malice and envy,
being hated and hating one another.”   Titus 3:3

“But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared; He saved us, not because of righteous things we had done,
but because of His mercy.”   Titus 3:4,5

“He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal of the Holy Spirit,
whom He poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior,
so that having  been justified by His grace,
we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life.”   Titus 3:6-7

“Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.”   Psalm 90:12

Locked Gates and Prayer

“Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.”  Jeremiah33:3

When the burdens of life become too heavy we can go to God in prayer anytime night or day and know that He hears us.  Prayer is having a conversation with God.  It involves both speaking and listening to God.  What a blessing it is that we can speak with Almighty God any time we have a need.  God doesn’t keep office hours and leave for long vacations or weekends.  He doesn’t even have a secretary that listens to our requests and decides whether it is important enough to have Him call us back later.  God never closes the gate and locks us outside of His love and concern.  God is available and desires for us to come to Him so that He can guide us to discover His best for us.

Have you ever felt rejected by someone or a group of people you thought were your friends?  Sometimes we are rejected because of race or religion.  Sometimes our values and priorities make others uncomfortable and they’d rather not have us around them.   Sometimes we aren’t really rejected but others are just too busy to spend time with us.Frequently we build walls around our own hearts – walls of bitterness, anger, fear and grief.  We lock the gate of our heart and refuse to let God in or even our friends and family.  We are held captive by our emotions.  Once we lock the gate to our heart, it is almost as though a roaring lion stands guard at the entrance, daring anyone who loves us to come near.

“Be self-controlled and alert.  Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.”            I Peter 5:8    But God promises to rescue us if we will only turn to Him.  We need not be held captive by unhealthy fears and emotions.   Prayer is the key that can unlock the gate.  It is God’s greatest gift to man.  It enables us to fellowship with Him and find hope and guidance for our lives.

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.  Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you.”                       Jeremiah 29:11,12

God desires that we unlock the gate to our heart so that He can come in and renew a right spirit within us.  It may not seem easy to open the gate.  The hinges may be rusty and the lock frozen shut.  But oh, it is so worthwhile!  When you let Jesus come into your heart, you will feel a great rush of love come pouring in and you will discover a peace that is above and beyond all that you could hope for or imagine.

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”     Romans15:13

Steadfast Trust

“Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you.”          Psalm 143:8

When I look back at the way the Lord has faithfully led me, I wonder why I still have concerns about the future.    Over and over again Jesus told us not to worry but when I see storm clouds up ahead I want to turn and run for safety.

“Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.”             Psalm 51:10

Jesus didn’t promise that we wouldn’t have difficulties but He did promise us His peace in the midst of these problems.   When we have steadfast trust we do not let changes, difficulties, sorrows and illness steal our peace.  A steadfast spirit trusts in God even when the way seems dark and dangerous. The storms of life will either draw us nearer to Jesus or cause us to turn and run in the wrong direction.

Jesus Draw Me Ever Nearer”

Written by Keith Getty and Margaret Becker

 Chorus 1
“May this journey bring a blessing
May I rise on wings of faith
And at the end of my heart’s testing
With Your likeness let me wake”   Verse 1
“Jesus draw me ever nearer
As I labor thro’ the storm
You have called me to this passage
And I’ll follow tho’ I’m worn”

Verse 2
“Jesus guide me thro’ the tempest
Keep my spirit staid and sure
When the midnight meets the morning
Let me love You even more”    Verse 3
“Let the treasures of the trial
Form within me as I go
And at the end of this long passage
Let me leave them at Your throne”

Ending
“Jesus draw me ever nearer
Jesus draw me ever nearer
Jesus draw me ever nearer to You
To You” Each day I must make a choice to either choose fear and anxiety or the peace of Christ. If I ask Jesus to take control of my life’s journey, I can know for certain that He will enable and empower me to follow the way which He has planned just for me.  Only God can see the map of my life from beginning to end and real safety is placing my trust in Him.

“You will keep in perfect peace him whose mind is steadfast, because he trusts in you.”            Isaiah 26:3

Invincible Faith

“Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.”    Hebrews 11:1

In order to stand firm in my faith, I must have God’s word in my mind and written on my heart.  Without His word I am as helpless as a little child standing at the edge of the ocean crying and afraid to move as his feet sink into the soft sand and the waves wash over his toes.   “Cast your cares on the LORD and He will sustain you; He will never let the righteous fall.”           Psalm 55:23

Have you ever been in a car accident or heard bad news and felt so frightened by it that your legs started shaking and you could hardly stand?  Jesus promises that He is faithful to help and support us when we cast our troubles on Him.  He promises to never let the righteous fall.

“The eyes of the LORD are on the righteous and His ears are attentive to their cry.”   Psalm 34:15

Righteousness is not just being good or doing good.  When God told Abraham,  “Look up at the heavens and count the stars if indeed you can count them.  So shall your offspring be.  Abram believed the LORD, and He credited it to him as righteousness.”      Genesis 15:5,6     Righteousness is believing God!

When we fix our eyes on Jesus we develop a trust that can not be shaken by the storms of life.  We are convinced that Jesus has our situation under control and we know that we can depend on this awesome and loving God as we walk though our difficulties with Him.  Thus even in the midst of a storm we will be completely at peace in His Presence.   I would like to tell you about a young husband, the father of two small boys who has shown what I think of as Invincible Faith.  These are his own words and his faith in God will bless your heart.

“It’s hard to believe it has been over four weeks since the initial aneurysm ruptured.  It can’t be that long ago, but it has been.  Four weeks, two days, 20 hours, and one minute exactly, but who’s counting?  Me.  I’m counting.  I’m counting all the horrifying images when I first saw Jana unresponsive and gasping for air; I’m counting the multiple hospital trips to finally get her where she needed to be; I’m counting the numerous surgeries and procedures that seemed to come almost daily.  I’m counting the lost hours from an exceptional wife and two adorable children, hours that I will never get back.  I’m counting that yes, but do you know what else I am counting?  I’m counting the thousands of people who have cared enough to pray continually and at a moments notice.  I’m counting the many doctors and nurses and residents who have worked their hardest to keep Jana alive.  I’m counting the opportunities to connect with other families and share in their strife.  I’m counting a best friend who takes on this ordeal as his own, has organized and planned so my focus was on Jana, and will drop his life to be at my side any time of day or night.  I am counting my family and friends who have taken my children as their own and allowed their lives to go virtually unchanged considering the circumstances.  I am counting the miracles I have witnessed with my own eyes and the hand of God that embraces me still.  I count and see how in the midst of pain there is joy; in the midst of sorrow there is laughter; in the midst of defeat there is victory.”

The following was posted a few days ago following Jana’s move from the hospital to a rehab center where she is in the Disorders of Consciousness program.

“So I am talking with the doctor about what my expectations were.  I told him that I didn’t have any.  I know what I hope, I know what I want, I know what I pray, but I don’t know what to expect.  I was getting the feeling that he was preparing me for the fact that she may not awaken.  That I needed to think about the next step.  Funny, but I thought this WAS the next step.  Having been through it before, I saw what he was doing.  He was preparing me and didn’t want me optimistic.”

“But why was he telling me this as we just got here?  So I asked him what he saw that made him say that.  He said it’s not what he saw, just all that she had been through.  Then I realized something:  He doesn’t know my wife or my God.”

“So I smiled a little and said, ‘I know where you are going, but you haven’t seen what I’ve seen.  You haven’t experienced the miracles that I have experienced.  So I tell you what, I won’t get too optimistic, and you allow yourself to be pleasantly surprised.’  He looked with a half smile and said okay.  I don’t think he had much faith in my faith.  I look forward to sharing with him God’s power over the next four weeks.”

“Jana seemed more alert today than I had seen her in the past two days.  I know the move was very stressful on her, but she kept her eyes open much longer in spite of that.  Her eyes were scanning the room more and not just staying in one place like they had been.  She even followed me with her eyes as I walked closer to her bed.”

“Jana is working every day with three therapists sometimes individually and sometimes as a group.  Today in therapy, we actually used her phone and I called her.  (The ringtone on Jana’s iPhone is a recording of her son’s infectious giggle.  It makes you smile every time you hear it.)  Jana seemed to lean her head towards the phone and “speak” many things.  Most of these were nonsensical and barely audible, but I didn’t care.  I didn’t care that she wasn’t answering me, or that her responses were not appropriate or that I could barely hear her, it mattered that she made the effort and that made my heart sing.  I have never looked more forward to the mundane task of talking to my wife on the phone as I do right now.  I will never take it for granted again.”

Jana is the beloved teacher of two of our grandchildren and is a dear and much loved friend of their entire family.  Please pray for her and her family.  Prayer is powerful and God is still in the business of working miracles everyday.

“O LORD Almighty, blessed is the man who trusts in you.”      Psalm 84:12

Abiding in His Peace

“You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.”                      Jeremiah 29:13

I love the changing of the seasons and already I’m wondering what great new adventures the LORD has in store for me this Fall.  For the last few mornings I’ve been waking up several hours before the time I wished to get up.  I pray and repeat bible verses but still I can’t seem to get back to sleep.  My spirit has been restless for days and I have questioned God if I am on the right path or if He has a new direction He wants me to take.  But I feel as though I’m standing at a locked gate and all I hear is silence.   “Trust in the LORD with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.”               Proverbs 3:5, 6

I wondered if I was asking God to direct me and then happily going down the path of my choice.   “This is what the LORD says:  Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls.”      Jeremiah 6:16

I felt that I had come to a crossroads in life and had no idea which way to go.   “Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying ‘This is the way; walk in it.'”      Isaiah 30:21

But I wasn’t hearing any voice, just silence.  Staying in bed when I couldn’t sleep seemed such a waste of valuable time when I had so much to get done.  But I wondered if God was trying to tell me something and I just wasn’t listening! Then this verse came into my mind and so I decided to lie still.

“Be still and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”           Psalm 46:10    I felt that God was being silent for a very good reason I just wished He would hurry up and tell me what it was.  I do not like to wait and if He had a new plan for my life, it seemed important to get up and get started.  But last week when I read Nikki’s post, “What Can I Do” at Simply striving and thought about these words from the song, “A Little Longer” by Brian and Jean Johnson, I felt like He was speaking straight to my heart.

“You don’t have to do a thing
Just simply be with Me and let those things go
‘Cause they can wait another minute
Wait…this moment is too sweet
Would you please stay here with Me
And love on Me a little longer.
I’d love to be with you a little longer
‘Cause I’m in love with you.”

So this morning when I couldn’t sleep, I thought about those words.  It was almost as though I could hear God saying, “You worry too much about sleep, my child.  I will give you rest.  Just wait here awhile in my Presence.”  And then I felt the greatest sense of peace and joy.  I felt so loved like a child in his father’s arms.  It is hard to describe the warm, secure feeling I felt as my Heavenly Father reassured me and held me close in His loving arms.   Perhaps God just wants us to slow down and seek Him with our whole heart.  He promises to give us peace in the storms of life if we will abide in His Presence.  When the time is right He will leads us in the way He has chosen for us.  But for now I’m just going to rest in His wonderful Presence.

“Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine.  Since you are precious and honored in my sight, and because I love you.”                Isaiah 43:1, 4
